Dans les années 1950 en Italie, un professeur à la retraite, Umberto Domenico Ferrari, souffre d'une pension insuffisante pour vivre. Habitant, avec son chien Flyke, chez une logeuse intransigeante, il essaie de trouver les fonds nécessaires au paiement de son loyer. Pour cela, il doit se démunir petit à petit de tout ce qui lui tient à cœur. Malgré ses efforts, il ne parvient toujours pas à rembourser ses dettes. Il se prétend alors malade, et parvient à dormir gratuitement à l'hôpital. De retour dans sa chambre, il s'aperçoit qu'elle est en train d'être transformée en salon et que son chien est absent. Il part à sa recherche et le retrouve dans un chenil proche. Umberto demande alors à ses connaissances de lui prêter de l'argent, mais toutes feignent d'être pressées. Ces refus obligent le vieil homme à envisager quelque chose de terrible pour lui, la mendicité. Mais, trop fier pour être vu en train de faire la manche, il semble prêt à se suicider...
